American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD)

June 2015 - The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is currently seeking a new President and CEO to advance attainment of the organization’s vision, “to develop the inherent power of people with disabilities to be both a political and economic force.” While they are looking for a new leader, the AAPD Board of Directors is temporarily relying on long-time disability rights advocate and former Executive Vice President, Helena Berger, as the Acting President and CEO of the organization. As the AAPD approaches their 25th anniversary, they are seeking feedback to take the organization to the next level. You can email them at communications@aapd.com with your questions or comments. As well as improving the organization, the AAPD is hosting A Celebration of Pride, Power, and Promise on July 27th in Washington, D.C. with their partner, the National Disability Leadership Alliance (NDLA). AAPD and USBLN to Release Disability Equality Index Survey

DEI Benchmarking Tool

May 2014 – The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) and the US Business Leadership Network (USBLN) have announced the release of an online “benchmarking tool” that rates a company’s effectiveness regarding implementations of policies that promote the inclusion of people with disabilities. The online tool, known formally as the Annual Disability Equality Index (DEI), was tested as a pilot in March 2014 with 48 Fortune 1000 companies. On June 26, 2014, AAPD and USBLN will be releasing survey questions about the DEI to the public in preparation for its first ever Annual DEI survey for Fortune 1000 companies. The survey will be available October 2014. Anyone interested in attending the public release for the DEI survey is required to register by June 19, 2014 at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DEI_Release.

2013 Compendium on Disability Statistics

December 2013 — The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) announced the release of the 2013 Compendium of Disability Statistics, a web-based tool that pools disability statistics published by various federal agencies. The Compendium is meant to serve as a tool for researchers and policy makers by providing accessible data to help support “decisions related to policy improvements, program administration, service delivery, protection of civil rights and major life activities.” Findings from the 2013 Compendium highlight that the employment gap between people with and without disabilities remains, with 32.7 percent of people with disabilities employed in 2012 as compared to 73.6 percent of people without disabilities. Also noted is the employment gap by education, wherein, “28.4 percent of people with disabilities with a Bachelor’s degree or higher are employed compared to 76.1 percent of people without disabilities.” President and CEO of AAPD, Mark Perriello, noted that “the findings contained in the 2013 Compendium on Disability Statistics shine a light onto the unfinished work that must be done to improve outcomes of Americans with disabilities. Despite recent gains from the federal government to the private sector to increase economic opportunities, Americans with disabilities remain unemployed and outside the work force at alarming rates. Business, government, and community organizations must work together to build outcome oriented solutions at the local, state, and national level.”
